By and large, I agree with your assessment of the later
"reunion" series. However, even there Webb managed to do some
fine episodes. The special two-hour episode first broadcast
during the third season of the series, in which Friday and
his partner are tracking a serial killer (based on the Harvey
Glatman case; Friday stands in for real-life LAPD homicde ace
Pierce Brooks, who solved the "Onion Field" case) is one of
the best things ever done on the series, whether color,
b&w, or radio.
