Another good jazz scene novel is Tin Angel by Paul Pines (no relation to Howard Browne/John Evans as far as I know). It's a crime novel set in the lower east side jazz clubs in New York of the late '70s, early '80s. My jazz knowledge doesn't go that deep, but even I recognized who some of the charcters' models were.
