Alter's Carny Kill was a good carnival noir. I worked as a
carny as a teenager and have always been fascinated by their
gypsy-like existence. I wouldn't put Carny Kill up there with
Gresham's Nightmare Alley, but they are similar in depicting
carnivals as an underworld of confidence people and depicting
carnies as a nomadic amoral subculture that has a sense of
family and community. I look forward to reading Frederic
Brown's The Fabulous Clipjoint.
My girlfriend liked Fisher's I Wake Up Screaming more than I
did.
