Yeah, Dark Angel in particular is terrific.

Also Caroline Shaw - Cat Catcher and its follow-up whose name escapes me - get past the fact they're about a woman who finds lost cats and these are really good - her detective Lenny Aaron is about as distinctively female a hard-boiled protagonist as I've come across.

Also Kenneth Cook's extraordinary Thompson-esque 60s outback noir Wake In Fright
