Despite having seen both film versions of this book, I'd
never read it before now. I found it considerably better than
either movie, very fast-moving and well-written. The only
books I'd read in the Parker series are _Slayground_ and
_Comeback_. Enjoyed them both but liked _The Hunter_ even
better. Nice touch the way Westlake describes one of the
characters as looking like the actor Louis Calhern. That
really puts the reader right into the era in which the book
was written. (Assuming, of course, that the reader knows who
Louis Calhern was.) Someone mentioned that the first three
books in the series are something of an unofficial trilogy. I
definitely intend to read the other two.
But my favorite book of this type is still Marlowe's _The
Name of the Game is Death_.
Best, James
