I thought quite a bit of Ellin's The Eighth Circle when I
read it last year.
I'm also a fan of Campbell's La-La Land series, with
Whistler, an old-school, aging PI in contemporary LA -- it
has yet to become overly self-referential, ala Amos Walker.
Nice set of contributing characters, especially Bosco,
Whistler's best friend and owner of the diner where they hang
out and watch the denizens of the Hollywood night walk
by.
