For those not entirely turned off by crime writing set in
previous periods of history, I recommend Owen Parry's Faded
Coat of Blue. Set in Washington, D.C. during the Civil War,
the view of DCs seamy side has noir aspects, based apparently
on thorough research. The protagonist is a former
professional soldier who served in India and tries to
maintain a quietist Christian perspective--all of which is to
say that he, while believeable for someone of that time, is
soft-boiled in his outlook. But Parry manages to get inside
the head of his officer and tell a good story in a language
that seems true to the character.
