At the risk of actually
answering the guy's question, I would suggest that O'Hara's
_Appointment In Samarra_ makes a good fit for the academic
world. Horace McCoy, too, in my opinion. Throw in a little
Bukowski or Celine, just to add a little note of pretension,
and you've probably got a course.
