I agree with the "never read a weak
one" appraisal of John Lutz. He is first rate. His plots are
solid even when they follow well worn paths. His characters
are real (or exaggerated if that's what he's after) and he
creates mood and place with care and fine craftsmanship. It's
easy to enjoy his work and to learn from him.
