Altman's Long Good-bye has great
moments, even though some of them stray far from portraying
the Marlowe we all know and love. The film fails, for my
money, when Altman can't hold his "Look At Me" gene in check,
as is most obvious in the final frames of the film. Altman,
like Tarrantino and unlike Scorsese or Robert Towne think
that the story is a device for displaying the wonderfulness
of the director. Ever since Mash when people told him he was
a genius, he's had trouble resisting himself. Just tell the
damned story.
