Thanks for the preview, Terrill. I've been impressed with
Connelly's thrillers, though I'm not sure he belongs in the
hardboiled category (and who cares?). I just wish he would
have fewer twists and turns in his plots and more character
development. In _The Poet_ the plot completely overshadowed
the characters, and thus, in retrospect, the book seems oddly
unsatisfying (though the suspense was unrelenting, a
technical thing of beauty). But Michael is evolving and does
not rely on a formula, which has been the downfall of many a
crime writer. I expect a lot of great work from him. Besides
the superior plots, I like his distance and journalistic
nonchalance while telling a story.
