I've never quite understood the "pretentious" charge, which
I've encountered before but never in a particularly coherent
or creditable manner. Is it pretense to try to play with
narrative form and to try to create an impressionistic style,
as he does? (Successfully, in my opinion) Or does this
presumed pretense lie in his approach towards history and
mystery?
