Whatever Bill Pronzini may be, he's certainly not a
"marginal" author. But setting that aside, Bill's point is
that the genuine hardboiled story was closely connected with
a time and place, and those are gone.
He may be wrong: I rather think he _is_ wrong--but please
don't call him
"marginal."
Incidentally, NIGHT FREIGHT is a sp;endid cvollectionm and at
about $5.50 a bargain.
