If anyone writes with as much
understanding of the importance and value of rhythm and
melody in hard boiled prose as Jon Jackson, I don't know who
it is. The man sets a fine beat and holds it. I don't know
what he learned from Ray Carver, but Carver could have used
some of Jackson's ability to sympathize with and get close to
his characters while maintaining a distance.
