There are scenes in the film, in which the phoniness of Astor
is being laughed at, so maybe it's all intentional. But
Ingrid Bergman? Please! Lemme think... Lana Turner? Joan
Bennett? Clara Bow? Maybe there just wasn't a woman for the
role. Barbara Stanwyck could've had the proper temperament
(just think of "Double Indemnity"), but not the looks. What
about Gloria Grahame? She wasn't in the movies in 1941. Maybe
we'll have to do with Mary.
