I encountered this new book in the library: "The Oxford
History of the Prison. The Practice of Punishment in Western
Society", edited by Norval Morris and David J. Rothman,
published in 1998. It includes an essay by W.B. Carnochan,
"The literature of confinement" in which the writer discusses
such writers as Bo봨ius (not very hardboiled, that one), John
Bunyan and Chester Himes. He lists also "the bird-man of
Alcatraz", Robert Stroud as one of the most important
imprisoned writers.
