I agree with you about Red Wind and Chinaman's Chance.
Another of my favorites is the opening line of Crumley's Last
Good Kiss. How can you go wrong with an alcoholic
bulldog?
And peaking of Chinaman's Chance, I always felt that Chinese
Gordon in Thomas Perry's Metzger's Dog was some sort of
homage to it. After all, Perry's book is very much in a
Thomas mode.
