No, you shouldn't. Even though it's arbitrary at times, it's
not pointless. In the essay Schrader formed the
classification of film noir that still stands. All the later
commentaries are based on Schrader's conclusions. In the end
of the essay Schrader strays far into the twilight zone of
metaphysics and doesn't give any substantial final analysis
of the subject, but the other part of the essay was pretty
good. Scharder clearly knows the films he's talking about,
which cannot always be said about all the commentators.
I've read the essay in Finnish, so I can't help you about the
locations of the essay.
