Chandler himself made it clear that plots were secondary to
dialogue and characterization. He always knew he was, first
and foremost, a dialoguist, and he exploited that talent
voraciously. That was one of the reasons he was signed by
Hitch to do screenplays (though that ended very badly --
tough deal). That tradition has been carried on by Parker,
whose novels are nothing if not dialogue driven. Some pretty
thin plots, but boy does the banter sizzle! R
