I wish I could, as Paul suggests, give a succinct reason why
STREET 8 is a masterpiece, but I can't. I just know that I
read it when it came out in paper many years ago and was
struck by the quality of both the writing and the plotting.
And any book I can remember for that long is bound to be
worth reading, right?
As for other hardboiled stuff, how about Flannery O'Connor,
with stories like "A Good Man Is Hard to Find"? According to
Joe Lansdale, O'Connor had a big influence on him.
