HIGH AND LOW is based on KING's RANSOM, a very good 87th
Precinct novel, although it's not as good as the movie.
That's because McBain is merely a fine writer, while Akira
Kurasawa is one of the greatest of all movie directors. In
any case, McBain is well worth reading and so is King's
Ransom, but start with HE WHO HESITATES, the best of the 87th
Precinct novels, if also the least typical.
