Hard-boiled Sports? I don't know, but I recall an article by Paul Gallico in the very earliest days of Sports Illustrated Magazine. In the article he said that there were only three sports; auto racing, bull fighting and mountain climbing. These were sports in which one risked and could lose one's life. All the rest, Gallico said, were recreations.
