"From Hell" is closer to noir than "Hawksmoor" or other
Ackroyd's novels, but even that isn't hardboiled. Very
frightening, of course. The note section of "From Hell" has
been published as its own volume. Apropos, Ackroyd has
written a novel about Jack the Ripper killings,
"Whitechapel Murders" or something like that. Try
"Chatterton", if you like intellectual word play and
deception.
