Went back and read some blurbs on Pale Rider, and yes, the critics compared it to Shane, and yes, Eastwood took some elements from Shane. Apparently, he also took some elements from Play Misty For Me and another of his older movies. As well as High Plains Drifter (the supernatural element).

In summary, it doesn't appear to have been a remake as much as a movie that borrowed different elements from different movies.
