Walter Hill didn't direct the botched remake of THE GETAWAY.
He received co-screenwriting credit (I assume they started
with his original script from the first movie) but he was
rewritten by hot-at-the-time writer Amy Holden Jones who
brought us the ever-so-hard boiled INDECENT PROPOSAL. Another
case of hype overcoming reason in the Hollywood decision
making process. Still, the film is not without its good
moments. It just pales by comparison to the original.
A few other other Hard Boiled westerns: VERA CRUZ, RIDE THE
HIGH COUNTRY, THE PROFESSIONALS, A MAN CALLED HORSE, GUNFIGHT
AT THE O.K. CORRAL, MAN OF THE WEST, 3:10 to YUMA (Elmore!),
PAT GARRETT AND BILLY THE KID, VALDEZ IS COMING! (Elmore
again!) RIO BRAVO (Leigh Brackett script, proving the ladies
CAN write this stuff), THE MAN WHO SHOT LIBERTY VALANCE, and
ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE WEST.
HUD is a modern day HB western without the gunfights.
Kevin mentioned THE UNFORGIVEN. Don't know if he means the
1960 Burt Lancaster flick or UNFORGIVEN, Eastwood's more
recent work, but both would qualify. (Hell, if Lancaster was
in anything it was probably hard boiled.)
