Just to plump for O'Brien, don't forget the book was written
20 years ago or more, and a lot of new research and criticism
has been done since then. Just look at what he says about Jim
Thompson, for example, and then compare that to the reprints
and two (!) biographies that came out in the
'90s.
This isn't to say you have to like his criticism or analysis,
but don't forget he was working with what little he could get
his hands on.
