There was a US firearms manufacturer called Gatling in the
19th Century, best knwn for a large, rapid-firing,
crank-operated weapon called the Gatling Gun, which was the
precursor the fully automatic machine guns. I believe that
"gat" may be a colloquial derivative of "Gatling."
