I find Willeford's Hoke Mosely books to be more about family than anything else. Sure, there's crime & detection but what the books are really about is Hoke's attempts to be a father.

By the way, Dave Barry's recent BIG TROUBLE reminded me a lot of the Hoke books. BIG TROUBLE was very funny and very well done. Recommended.

I would say that this book is his masterpiece. If you didn't like it, you probably won't like his other noir books. I suggest trying the Hoke Mosely series (four books). Those are sui generis police procedurals. Miami Blues is terrific.
