I find Willeford's Hoke Mosely books to be more about family
than anything else. Sure, there's crime & detection but
what the books are really about is Hoke's attempts to be a
father.
By the way, Dave Barry's recent BIG TROUBLE reminded me a lot
of the Hoke books. BIG TROUBLE was very funny and very well
done. Recommended.

I would say that this book is his masterpiece. If you didn't
like it, you probably won't like his other noir books. I
suggest trying the Hoke Mosely series (four books). Those are
sui generis police procedurals. Miami Blues is
terrific.
