Hi Bill!
My vote does not go to the Dan Kearny series. I'd recommend
CASES, which I believe was recently issued in paperback. Set
in the 50's, it describes the growth of a hardboiled
detective _and_ the reason for the attitude. Tied with John
Katzenbach's HART'S WAR for Best Novel of 1999 (IMHO, of
course).
