In that case, Neil, you really should check out Don Winslow's
Neal Carey mysteries, they are all about his learning his
craft and his relationship to his mentor, especially the
first one, A Cool Breeze on the Underground, set in punk
London. So they start in the late '70s, early '80s (with
backstory references to earlier). They run in real time and
should definitely be read in order. And although Neal has
masters' skills in technique pretty much from the beginning,
he does make a fair number of believable mistakes, due to
youth, love, lust, etc. over the course of the series.
