Speaking of series exhaustion, I seem to remember reading
somewhere that Loren Estleman had initially made a rule that
he would never carry a character for more than 7 books. He
rethought this rule when he reached that magic number with
Amos Walker.
Perhaps it is a good rule, not just for him, but for all
series writers. Stark's Parker is among the very few series
that really works past that number and even in this case, the
early ones were the best.
