1001 midnights is an amazing reference book that I just
obtained from an online source (ABE). The book is edited by
Marcia Muller and Bill Pronzini and came out back in 1986. At
that time I tried to find it but didn't succeed so up until
yesterday I had only heard about it but never seen a
copy.
Well, it has some interesting shortcomings.
It seems very much to be a product of the late 70's and early
80's. Undue weight goes to the authors of that period. It's
also very heavily skewed to the interests of the two editors
which is why I'm bringing it up here as Pronzini's main
interest is squarely along Rara avis lines. Just about every
hardboiled author who ever wrote gets included and it's quite
interesting too.
So how many of you have this book and what
do you think of it? Do you refer to it often? Bill Crider is
one of the contributors so Bill, what can you tell me about
this book? Also, is $20 a good price for it now? Marian
