I thought Small Vices was quite good,
Joe Mantegna was a good if not great Spenser, although Hawk
seemed more teddy bear than grizzly. Susan was on the money.
Even Parker's hammy cameo as a government spook was
adequate.
The biggest pleasant surprise was
that the story had a beginning, a middle, and an end. Three
elements usually missing from a Spenser book.
Don't get me wrong. Parker's books
are usually no more than a few extended vignettes, but
they're enjoyable and a good read.
I look forward to more.
