When Burke gets down to business, he
is terrific. I love his writing. I love his descriptions. I
love his dialogue. It's all the angst and baggage and things
that go bump in the night that Robicheau drags with him that
I can't tolerate. Clete Purcell is a great character, and
mayhem is okay when appropriate to the story. Nevertheless,
I'm prejudiced against cowboy sidekicks who shoot up
everything and thus relieve the sleuth of having to actually
solve a case.
