They wouldn't be classified as hard boiled,, but Aaron Elkins' books featuring Dr. Gideon Oliver, 'The Skeleton Detective', certainly fits the bill. One of the series, 'Old Bones' won the Edgar in 1987. I would call them interesting if not compelling. Mark Blumenthal
