Bringing up Paul Auster and the New York Trilogy reminded me. Does everyone who is into those know Auster wrote a straight PI novel set against the background of another of his great loves, baseball? It's called Squeeze Play by Paul Benjamin (Auster's first and middle names). It's not bad and has none of that slumming quality you too often get when "serious writers" stoop to write genre fare.
