RARA-AVIS: Third-Person Hardboiled

Jim Beaver asked about third-person PIs. THE MALTESE FALCON was
written in the third-person. More recently, there have been John Lutz's
Fred Carver series and James W. Hall's Thorn books.
In general, I think first-person allows the writer to get into the
voice of the lead and establish a pervasive hardboiled atmosphere. This
process seems to take a while longer in the third-person. Other
thoughts?
