RARA-AVIS: We're at least partly hip

Mon, 19 Apr 1999 23:23:10 -0400 (EDT) Someone named Candi Strecker lists books making up the modern hipster's
five-foot shelf of classics at

http://www.sfbg.com/lit/features/hipster.html

It's as silly as most such lists done now, but modern hipsterism and us
intersect twice:

| Hard-boiled genre: Darkening the bookshelves of every modern hipster
| are a clutch of noir novels. Jim Thompson has to be there, with Killer
| Inside Me or one of his many other powerful novels. Two other dark
| minds rank almost as high: Cornell Woolrich, a genius for titles (I
| Married a Dead Man and The Bride Wore Black) and Charles Willeford
| (particularly his earlier novels, such as Wild Wives and High Priest
| of California).

and

| Pimp lit: One man has this genre to himself: Iceberg Slim, author of
| Pimp: The Story of My Life, Trick Baby, and many more.

Be cool.
