Fri, 16 Apr 1999 19:17:31 -0400 (EDT) The soundtrack to Chinatown was finally reissued on CD by Varese
Sarabande in 1996. From the liner notes:

This long-awaited release marks the first appearance of the classic
score for Chinatown on compact disc. The re-issue is a straightforward
presentation of the original album including the same tracks, sequencing
and cover art. The listener should be aware that the original album
combined some cues for listening purposes and used takes that differed
from some of those heard in the actual film. Production details aside,
the recording is a complete account of one of the composer's most
memorable scores. Goldsmith is as modest as he is gifted, but when
pressed he is willing to admit that "Chinatown is one of my favorite
scores and one of my favorite pictures." For his artistry and effort on
Chinatown, Jerry Goldsmith was recognized by his peers with his seventh
Academy Award nomination.
