RE: RARA-AVIS: The Litle Sister and Hollywood

Tue, 13 Apr 1999 01:55:54 -0400 (EDT) The first time I saw Altman's Long Goodbye, I was as offended as Jerry
Buck is. This wasn't the Marlowe I knew, paricularly in the end when he
SPOILER ALERT blows Terry Lennox away.

Later, however, I decided to see it again, look at it as a film in its
own right instead of as an adaptation of my favorite Chandler novel. It
is now a favorite film of mine, to such a degree that when I later saw
it on TV and they cut the ending (at that time you couldn't show someone
getting away with a crime) so it was more like Chandler's ending I was
as outraged by the way they ruined the film as I had once been outraged
by the way the film ruined the book.

Just a note, Leigh Brackett wrote the screenplay to Long Goodbye, as she
had 27 years earlier co-written the script for Big Sleep. In checking
the dates, I just found out she also co-wrote Rio Bravo, one of my
favorite westerns.
