<<Adaptations are certainly fair game. I thought this
was an excellent
movie. Gig Young's performance is a knock-out. Certainly a
recommended
rental for anyone on the list, but buying it means a
bigger
investment.>>
Speaking from memory (it has been a long time since I last
saw the
film), I would say that Pollack's team does justice to the
book and is
well worth seeing. While I am now less thrilled to see Jane
Fonda than I
was then, I cannot imagine that this powerful film has lost
its edge.
Just to be playful, I would like to see what a stark intimist
like
Robert Bresson could do with this novel -- or a crazoid like
Roman
Polanski.
By the way, if the Bresson retrospective comes to a place
near you, drop
everything and go -- his is a brilliant oeuvre that has only
grown in
stature with the passage of time.
