A few that I've found useful:
The mid-50s edition of *The Mystery Writers Handbook* edited
by
Herbert Brean with articles by Lawrence Treat, John D.
MacDonald, etc.
The book publishing arm of *The Writer* has published several
editions
of collections of articles, originally appearing in its
magazine, by
mystery writers of articles on the mystery.
Lawrence Block's *Telling Lies for Fun and Profit*, a
collection of
his regular fiction-writing columns in *Writers Digest*.
Jack Bickham wrote a good series of how-to articles on the
short story
for *Writers Digest* which were collected and expanded into a
book,
the title of which escapes me at the moment.
Both of the above articles are on fiction generally rather
than
mysteries specifically, but both writers are well-known
suspense
novlests and everything they say is applicable to crime
fiction.
The book arm of *Writers Digest* also has published two
editions of
articles on mystery writing, the exact titles of which escape
me but
I'll post them tomorrow. - Jim Doherty
