I'd recommend any of the Matt Scudder books, but especially 8 Million,
When the Sacred Gin Mill Closes and after. The Burglar books are okay,
but they can get a bit cutesy. I haven't read any of the Tanners. His
early paperback originals are all good, especially Girl With The Long
Green Heart and Such Men Are Dangerous (originally by Pete Kavanagh).
