I was surprised to see this touted as a sequel too. Indeed,
from the
setup at the end of TMF, one would certainly not expect to
see Marlowe
embroiled in it. Gutman and Cairo, certainly. Wilmer and
O'Shaugnessy,
not unless one or both of them escaped. But Spade seems too
smart to go
traipsing off to Europe and parts unknown for a long shot at
some dough
and a good chance of getting bumped off by these pathetic
crooks.
Perhaps Gutman and Cairo could fall afoul of Maigret?
Whatever the eventual complications, it looks to me like the
field is
wide open for a sequel. If this were a writers' list, I'd
propose a
round robin...
