The main reason is that the first film, made for United
Artists for
under a million dollars, surprised everyone and made a TON of
money.
So, whatever the filmmakers choices were in the tone of that
film, they
hit a nerve in the audience that assured a sequel. The sequel
made even
more money, Connery as Bond became an icon and the series
was
established.
First great crisis in the Bond money-train was when Connery
said: "No
more Bonds no matter how much money you offer..." And the
producers
managed to maintain and eventually improve their franchise
with others
portraying Bond.
