I was in a used paperback store the other day that had
mysteries oddly separated into two sections -- "Mysteries,
Male
Authors" and "Mysteries, Female Authors". Most hardboiled
stuff, of course, is written by men (and I'm sure the
store
would have put Vin Packer and Leigh Brackett in the male
section, as they had P. D. James!), but it still struck me as
a
less-than-useful division. There were a few Donald
Hamiltons
in a "Men's Adventure" section, all of which I bought,
including a volume entitled _Murder Twice Told_ comprising
two
hardboiled late-1940s novellas, "Deadfall" and "The Black
Cross".
