On the hardboiled side, I served as Santa to myself this
year. I found a
banged-up copy of STRONGARM by Dan Marlowe -- I don't think
this is part of
the Drake series.
I also picked up THE BIG BOOK OF NOIR, which I've been
enjoying thoroughly
so far (except for the initial cover-all-bases introduction,
which, as it
tries to embrace everything, succeeds only in diluting its
effectiveness).
I really liked the Mark Lawrence profile/interview by Lee
Server. During
its course, perennial movie-mobster Lawrence mentions fellow
tough-guy
Lawrence Tierney, who I wish was covered by a similar profile
in this book.
As for having room for more books -- Well, I'm currently
clearing out the
"book room" to make room for baby, due in a few months.
Personally, I think
the covers to a few hardboiled volumes would be great for
early visual
development, but I'm dutifully boxing up everything and
toting it to the
attic. So, the "less available room means fewer purchases"
paradigm is now
active at our house. I think space is always the problem for
people who
love to read -- particularly folks who love to read
out-of-print stuff
that's rarely available at the local library. -- Duane
