RARA-AVIS: Robert Dietrich

A friend of mine recently told me about reading Mistress to
Murder by
Robert Dietrich. He said it was okay, not great, but kind of
fun for
its local setting in DC. He said Dietrich was kind of a
Pelecanos of
the 50s and 60s. This friend thinks about the same of Pelecanos
as he
does of Dietrich, kind of fun for the local setting, but not
great.
Since I think a bit more of Pelecanos (though not as much as
some who
have praised him on high), I thought I'd seek another opinion.
Has
anyone on the list read Dietrich and have an opinion? Does he
have more
to offer me than seeing what DC was like a few decades ago? As
far as
that goes, I always got a kick out of that aspect of many of
Ross
Thomas's novels, but he had so much more to go with it.
Thanks,
Mark
