<< So far I've read the title essay and three of the
stories. Here's a
few short comments, to start things off.
"I'll Be Waiting" (Saturday Evening Post, 14 October 1939)
is one of
my favourite Chandler stories. >>
I like "I'll Be Waiting" a lot too. But, I thought I recall
reading that
Chandler thought it was schmaltzy-conforming to the demands
of the slicks
(Saturday Evening Post in this case). I sure like the opening
of "Red Wind."
Is the line "`You sure cut the clouds off them, buddy'" an
example of the
made-up slang that Chandler talked about or real slang? I'll
have more to
say, maybe, if I ever learn to type with Dvorak.
On Mario's suggestion, I gave up looking for Matt Helm books,
which enabled me
to find seven of them for 25 cents each (but not Murderers'
Row). Now I'm
going to have to stop looking for Ted Lewis.
Finally, big raves for the new (or new to me) Big Book of
Noir, starring a
good many of the rara-avis cast, including Bill Crider,
Etienne Borgers, and
Robert Skinner. Sections on film, fiction, comics, and radio.
Probably a
must-buy for those on this list. Nice to have an index
too.
