Huh? Maybe it's not so simple.
Are we talking about just the essay, or the collection of
short stories
withn the same name? Which edition? There are several
versions of the short
stories. I have a 1968 hardcover edition listing twelve
stories, plus the
essay, and a couple of intros. I also have a 1980 Ballantine
paperback with
just four of the stories, plus the essay. The rest were
printed in other pb
collections (entitled Pick-Up on Noon Street and Trouble Is
My
Buiness)...and supposedly, there's also a British version,
with some of the
same stories, but not all of them..And I have no idea what's
in thecurrent
Black Lizard/Vintage edition.
But I guess it doesn't really matter. Read as much as you can
track down.
It's all good stuff.
And, for what it's worth, the original edition
included:
Editor's Intro, by James Nelson
Introduction by Raymond Chandler
Finger Man
Smart-Aleck Kill
Guns ar Cyrano's
Pick-Up on Noon streeet
Goldfish
The King in Yellow
Pearls Are a Nuisance
I'll Be Waiting
Red Wind
Nevada Gas
Spanish Blood
Trouble is My Business
The Simple Art of Murder (the essay)
